Advocacy for Public Policy

SSCAN’s legislative group advocates for public policy that reduces greenhouse gas emissions in Washington State and prepares our communities, especially the most vulnerable, for anticipated climate change effects.  We urge our public officials to be leaders for climate justice.

During the Washington State legislative session we identify and monitor the most significant bills that concern climate change and we work to inform legislators about our concerns and priorities. We also work with city and county representatives to make climate action a priority.

HOW WE DETERMINE OUR LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES

Scope of Legislative Priorities

SSCAN’s legislative priorities focus on climate change legislation. However, tax reform and anti-war legislation have also been priorities. This is because tax reform is critical to the long term success of climate change policy. We work on anti-war legislation because our military is the largest producer of greenhouse gases and because many SSCAN members are in the 9th Congressional District.  Congressman Adam Smith from the 9th Congressional District is the chair of the House Armed Services Committee

Principles Used to Determine Legislative Priorities

  • Proposals that are High Impact
  • Proposals that are Low Cost
  • Proposals that, if passed, Send a Statement
  • Proposals that recognize the importance of Intersectionality and a Just Transition
  • Proposals that are consistent with the objectives of Other Climate Change Organizations that SSCAN partners with
  • Someone willing to take the lead
