I have an OpEd in today’s Seattle Times, WA just dodged a bullet-train boondoggle.

The “Ultra” HSR project being pushed on WA state estimates approximately the same ridership (3 million) as the Long Range Plan for the Amtrak Cascades, but at 10x the price. And instead of getting faster reliable rail in 10 years, “Ultra” will take 30 – if it ever gets built at all. It is the very definition of a boondoggle.
Why is this even a possibility? The details on the corruption that got us into this mess are not included in this OpEd, i.e. WSP inserting someone at the Governor’s office, as well Microsoft using its lobbying power and front group Challenge Seattle to hijack the system; those details will hopefully be in the news soon.
